How We Calculate Your NYC Budget
The calculator includes the extra NYC costs that many visitors forget:
- Hotel taxes: NYC hotel rooms carry about 14.75% in taxes plus a $1.50 per-night fee. Your total is noticeably higher than the advertised rate.
- Sales tax on meals: Restaurant bills include 8.875% sales tax.
- Tipping: A 20% tip is standard at NYC restaurants. The Budget style assumes about 10% because most meals are counter-service.
- Subway fares: A ride costs $3.00 with OMNY tap-to-pay. Once you've paid $35 in 7 days, the rest of your rides that week are free.
- Rooms and nights: The calculator assumes 2 travelers per hotel room and counts nights as days minus 1. Budget travelers are counted as 1 bed per person.
Flights and airport transfers are not included.
Tips to Save Money in NYC
- Tap the same card or phone every time. OMNY only counts toward the weekly cap when you use one payment method.
- Enjoy the free sights. Central Park, the Staten Island Ferry, the High Line, and walking the Brooklyn Bridge cost nothing.
- Look for discounted Broadway tickets. Try the TKTS booth, digital lotteries, and rush tickets.
- Check the total price of your hotel. Compare rates with taxes included, not just the nightly rate.
- Eat lunch at the fancy spots. Many top restaurants offer lunch prix-fixe menus that cost far less than dinner.
